services: Role of the CSMT as a Knowledge Provider in the frame of the BLUE-BOOST Project: CSMT, backed by the Lombardy Mobility Cluster expertise, intends to offer as a Knowledge Provider its experience gained in the project “Dual-fuel diesel-methane for heavy vehicles” outlined below, with the aim of extending the results of the research from the automotive to the marine field. In brief, the dual-fuel concept involves a simple modification to a diesel engine in order to be able to burn a mixture of diesel fuel and methane, thus allowing a significant reduction of emitted particulates and CO2. In order to comply with the new stringent limits of emissions also for boats, it is in many cases not convenient for technical and economic reasons to undertake a costly substitution of the power train. This system of dual-fuel combustion involves a simple kit added to the engine, and in addition the installation on board of the reservoirs for methane (steel bottles or cryogenic reservoirs); it proves therefore to be a simple and relatively low-cost refurbishing for small boats, fishing boats, leisure boats. The advantages are in the environmental field and in the fuel costs, thanks to the price of methane, that is significantly lower than diesel oil because of the lack of excises.

previous experience: The past experience of the Cluster and the proposed extension to the marine field was presented and discussed during the “2nd Blue Scenario Workshop” in Monfalcone on February 22nd, 2019. The contents are briefly summarized hereafter. Past experience: In 2013-2015 a research project was undertaken in Brescia on heavy trucks, aimed at the improvement of the environmental performance / decrease the carbon footprint of heavy vehicles for the transport of goods and people, with reference to the Euro 3, Euro 4 and Euro 5 emission classes, through the adaptation of diesel engines to work with mixed methane-diesel fuel. From the project results, it came out that the proposed technology allows a significant improvement in the emissions of fine dust and carbon dioxide from circulating heavy vehicles (the research has shown a 50% reduction in fine dust and 5 ÷ 10% of carbon dioxide) with particularly economical and minimally invasive means (addition of a "kit" or conversion complex without modifying the engine), having practically no rival technologies in this function. In addition, it allows the opening to the innovative use of cryogenic liquefied methane (LNG), and to the use of biomethane derived from organic or vegetable waste, according to a trend that is spreading more and more and that will allow to produce methane from completely renewable sources. Extension to the marine field of small boats Considering in particular the domain of fishing boats, their diesel engines are mainly derived from the road transport versions, and therefore the application of the dual fuel kit is relatively straightforward. A case study is considered of fishing boats having engines in the power range of 200 to 400 HP. The improvement expected are a 50% reduction in particulate emissions and a 5-10% reduction in CO2, in addition to a significant noise improvement. In addition, considering a 210 days/year and 12 hrs/day operation the results are: -for “small” fishing boats (?200HP) the compressed methane on board can be contained in steel cylinders at 200 bar (in addition to the diesel fuel reservoirs that have to be kept) -for “large” fishing boats (?400HP) the “cryogenic liquid methane” is the preferred solution, contained in specialized double-wall reservoirs, according to a solution of large diffusion in on-road applications. -for intermediate sizes the solution must be studied. Finally, a considerable economic saving is foreseen considering the current fuel prices, ranging from 4.000 to 8.000 Euro /year, allowing a return of the investment in around four years. The questions relating to the ashore fuel supply system have not yet been considered, but several simple experimental systems can be sought for starting.
